What Is rPET? A Complete Guide to Recycled PET
rPET (recycled PET) is polyethylene terephthalate produced by collecting and recycling used PET packaging — primarily beverage bottles. Compared with fossil-based “virgin” PET, it is produced with a significantly lower carbon footprint and is one of the key building blocks of the circular economy in plastic packaging.
How Is rPET Produced?
Production starts with post-consumer PET bottles collected through various waste management systems. At the recycling facility the bottles pass quality control, are sorted by colour and separated from labels and caps. Crushing, hot washing and decontamination then yield high-purity PET flakes, which can be extruded and polycondensed into rPET granules. You can follow every step on our recycling process page.
rPET vs Virgin PET: What Is the Difference?
Chemically, rPET and virgin PET are the same polymer; the difference is the source of the raw material. Virgin PET is produced from fossil resources, while rPET gives already-produced plastic a new life. High-purity rPET made with modern decontamination technology matches virgin PET performance in most applications — with significantly lower energy consumption and greenhouse-gas emissions.
What Is Food-Grade rPET?
rPET intended for food-contact packaging must be decontaminated in line with food-safety regulations. In Europe these processes are evaluated by EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority). Granules such as rPET Resin FG, produced with EFSA-approved processes, are safely used in bottle-to-bottle production, while rPET Resin NFG serves non-food applications. See our rPET granules.

Why Does rPET Matter?
The EU Single-Use Plastics Directive requires at least 25% recycled content in PET beverage bottles from 2025 and 30% from 2030, and the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) extends these targets further. These rules increase demand for certified, high-quality rPET every year.
